| The Painted Hills Unit is the best known and most visited section of the monument. It is located just west of Mitchell. Take Bridge Creek Road 6mi north from Oregon Hwy 26. From the Painted hills a scenic but primitive gravel road continues north to the John Day River and beyond. |
