A younger John sailed from Scotland for dubious reasons and worked for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Nisqually not too far from our home. He traveled around the Pacific Northwest for some 20+ years. Most Hudson Bay employees retired and settled in the Nisqually and Willamette Valleys with their native wives and families. After all, the soil was rich and the weather much milder. But not John. He returned to Gearrannan with his native wife and family. A interesting coincidence for us to be staying in his house.
