Eilean Hoan from the beach at Traigh allt Cheilgeag. Near Sangobeg. There are remains of a Clearance Village here. The Highland Clearances occurred in the 18th and 19th Century and were largely carried out by absentee hereditary aristocratic landowners who evicted tenant farmers by force in order to convert their land to more profitable sheep grazing. The resulting destruction of both landscape and culture is still being felt today. |
